T-Mobile is expanding its satellite-to-cell service across the United States and has added compatibility for several popular third-party apps. The Starlink-powered T-Satellite network now supports WhatsApp, X, AccuWeather, and Google Maps in addition to T-Mobile’s own T-Life app. The rollout also includes outdoor platforms like onX, CalTopo, and AllTrails.
The service is free with most T-Mobile subscriber plans. However, it can also be purchased separately for $10 per month. Eligible devices will automatically connect to satellites if Wi-Fi or cellular coverage is unavailable. T-Mobile claims that the service would give priority to essential app features over excessive data usage.
WhatsApp users can share messages, images, and voice notes in addition to having voice and video conversations, including group calls. X allows users to upload text, images, GIFs, and movies. They can also control media quality while scanning through feeds to preserve data.
T-Satellite can connect to some Samsung devices, Pixels, and iPhones that already have built-in apps. Supported services include Google Messages, Find Hub, Apple Music, Fitness, Maps, and Weather, in addition to Samsung’s Weather app.
This expansion represents a major paradigm shift. When T-Satellite first launched in July, it only provided text messaging and location sharing.
